The management and control of COVID-19 relies on a global effort of social distancing. From March 25 through April 7, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb has ordered a ”stay at home” order.

 

That  means residents should stay in their homes and limit travel to essential trips only, such as picking up groceries and prescriptions, receiving medical care, going to work or taking care of another person. All nonessential businesses will be  closed, and their employees are prohibited from leaving their homes to work, unless they are deemed “essential.”

 

With that in mind, here are some things you CAN and CANNOT do right now.

 

DO’s

 

  • Practice good hygiene. Wash your hands, cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing, try to refrain from touching your mouth or face.
  • Go to the grocery store. Yes, you can still go to the grocery store, but try to go when the store is less busy. This could be late night or early morning. Wipe the cart off before touching it.
  • Order takeout. With no evidence the virus lives on food, it’s still possible to order takeout from some of your favorite restaurants. We encourage you to order from local establishments, as your business is crucial to their survival during this difficult time. Order and pay online to decrease your contact with restaurant staff.
  • Go on a solitary walk or run outdoors. The fresh air may be a nice reprieve from so much time indoors, just remember to keep a six ft. distance from others. It’s also possible to watch or download free instruction videos that many gyms and studios are doing for free.
    • National Institute on Aging has great 20 min workouts for seniors on their YouTube page.
    • YMCA is offering access to free online exercise videos including Active Older Adults, Yoga, Barre, Tai Chi and more. No membership needed.
    • Peloton is offering a free 90-day-trial on its app. This includes indoor cycling, running, walking, bootcamp and strength classes.
    • Pure Barre is conducting free online classes daily through Facebook Live. No membership needed.
  • Host online hangouts with family and friends. The beauty of technology is being able to stay connected with loved ones despite physical distance. With Facetime, Zoom and other video platforms, you can have dinner, happy hour, and nightly chats with your family and friends. You can even watch a movie “together” through a

 

DON’TS

  • Use public transportation. Public transportation should not be used if it can be avoided. If it is necessary for essential travel, carry disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer if possible.
  • Visit family and friends. For your safety and the safety of your friends and family, you should remain home unless you are attending to the medical needs or essential assistance of your family members.
  • Attend religious services. Religious services should be cancelled or moved completely to online streaming services in order to practice social distancing.
  • Seek non-essential medical services. Nonessential medical care such as eye exams and teeth-cleaning should be postponed, and when possible, health care visits should be done remotely. However, if you are experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough or difficulty breathing, please stay home and call your health care provider for further instruction.
